The feed counts who expands your post and how long they stay, so a first line that earns the click quite literally buys reach. You can write a great post and bury it under a weak opener. Most hook generators produce the same recognizable stuff: "It's not about X, it's about Y", tidy three-item lists, em dashes everywhere.
